Everyday Heroes - at Northview Day School

Again I have been reminded that something great has happened not far from me. I am reminded each day that it happened but just don’t think of it often. It happened again yesterday as a baby stroller was wheeled by our office door with a crying baby on board. My wife commented, “Someone is not a happy camper.”

The little guy that was crying is part of a student body of close to 200 children now. He is a member of our Northview Day School that is happening every day in our church building. His is likely the newest member also – missing mommy a whole lot.

Last evening it came home again – something great has happened in our community and in our church. The Northview Day School was pioneered 22 years ago with the idea that the struggling little ministry could do something to help parents that needed some one to look after their children.

Last evening I attended a Christmas function for the Northview Day School where it was related again what has happened over all these years.

22 years ago a small staff began with an idea that they could make it work and four “students” – four little ones that needed care. I don’t believe that any of them ever thought it would be as great as it is. It has grown to be one of the greatest child care organizations in our province. And it all happens just outside my office door.

This week the different classes have started their Christmas Concert practices. Slowly they walk from class rooms to the main auditorium – where their two teachers teach a new song or have them listen to the music that will guide their part of the Concert.

Believe me they are cute! And on the Christmas Concert day – the over 700 people that join in to watch them think they the cutest!

The fact that we have about 200 children attending the Day School lets you know that there are about 400 super proud parents, and possibly 1600 busting at the seams, over proud grandparents, and quite a few great grandparents that will see the photos taken that day. Not everyone gets to attend – buy everyone will get to see the photos.

Martin and Norman McLeod(our CEO of the Northview Day School) were there at the beginning of the dream to look after the kids. Last night we honoured them with a card and a token of our love for them.

Their two kids were among the first small group to be cared for… and loved on. Today they are both in University and doing very well.

I came across to quotes that fit well in the idea of what the Board of Nortview Day School and its staff have done over all these years…

The first one…
When a man has put a limit on what he will do, he has put a limit on what he can do. Charles M. Schwab 1862 - 1939

The second one…
In the depth of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer. Albert Camus 1913 – 1960

Norma and Martin have been two of the partners in this adventure over all these years… and I am truly grateful for what they have done. They are true heroes!

But to say that they are the main ones, they both would not agree. The main people that count are the amazing Northview Day School staff. The young lady pushing the stroller yesterday with the “Unhappy Camper” in it is a hero. The other teachers that look after each little one at lunch and snack time, serving and then cleaning little faces are simply heroes too.

I am sorry if I sound like I am bragging on these folks – but there is nothing else that can be done. THEY ARE GREAT!

But behind these folks are an amazing set of Boards that give love and care to the staff and kids of our School. There is a Northview Day School Board and a Northview Day School Parent Board. Working together they give assistance to the staff and the heroes of the organization.

Along time ago, one man stood with the small day school staff and helped in areas of organization of a Board. This man was Don Kennedy. Don is gone now and has entered his final reward. But in a strong tradition that was established a long time ago – new people have come alongside to state that they care and will give their time gladly to sit on Boards, make decisions and express their care to lots and lots of kids… and hundreds of adults that own these kids.

Northview Day School has and is making a difference in this community in special ways.

The Bible makes a clear statement that can guide all that I am saying here…

1 Thessalonians 5
12Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

On behalf of Northview Pentecostal Church and the larger community of Peterborough, I want to say “Thanks” to the staff, Parent Board, and Board of the Nortview Day School. You have made a difference in thousands of lives and we thank you.
