Just a Little About Sex
Yesterday was our BIRTHDAY PARTY for two grandkids. As we sat in the restaurant the Chinese food was great. But the very best part was watching the 6 grandkids together – then the second part was watching their moms(our daughters) trying to keep a lid on the fun.
My account today focuses on Christopher – the youngest grandchild at 6 years old. He is full of it.
At the table our youngest daughter Anda, Christopher’s mom, shared another “Christopher story”. I blog it today to lighten your world and give you a giggle.
The Setting…
It was a busy store with lots of people around Anda and her boys. I am not sure what prompted it but Christopher decided to ask in his bright, loud and clear 7 year old voice – for all to hear – “How do you make a Baby?”
With great wisdom, Anda replied, “It’s a long story. I will tell you later.” He accepted his mom’s advice and they completed their shopping.
Later in the van on the way home Anda began to tell him the story.
Are you ready as a reader?
“Christopher, when boys grow up and become men they have something inside of them called ‘sperm’. When girls grow up and become women they have something called ‘eggs’. God made it so when the man’s sperm goes to the woman’s eggs a Baby is made.”
She paused and waited for him to process this information.
Christopher matter-of-factly stated, “That is not a long story.”
Anda regrouped and decided maybe another day she would add more details.
Another setting…
Anda and Bill’s oldest son is Jonathan. Now 11 and very bright. He fits into his hockey world with ease and is pretty normal.
One day Jonathan came home to tell his mom what happened at school. One of the boys had shared a joke with his group of friends which Jonathan is a part of… Because this is a ‘churchy blog’ – I dare not risk the wrath of older readers and won’t write it out. It had something to do with “Home Depot” and sex.
Anda asked Jonathan if he understood what it meant. His reply was, “Not really…” Then she asked him if he had laughed. His reply was, “Yah… everyone else was laughing too.”
Her request to Jonathan was that when he hears this kind of thing to not repeat it. He should rather come home and tell his mom and dad and then ask them to explain it. Made sense…
Anda asked Jonathan if he would like to know more about what sex is about. Jonathan looked at her with a grin and gave an honest answer… “No, not really, not now..”
Hang on Anda and Bill… the story will have to get longer and more detailed… But my guess is that by the time that you tell it… they may already know…
A Long Time ago…
It was about 51 years ago that my dad came out onto the veranda of our little house on a Sunday afternoon. I was playing or reading or something. I was 11 years old and a million miles from the place in my imagination. I remember it was late summer – still warm outside.
Dad came to sit on the chair beside me. He said, “There is something that I want to tell you.” His serious tone was not something that he and I had shared often. It indicated at that moment that something big was coming.
He looked at me and paused. He said, “Murray, mom is going to have a baby.” My expression must have given away the weird feelings that I had inside at that moment. I think that my first words were, “Why?” and the second one, “How?”
I cannot remember what his answer was. I do know that he gave me a customized version of the ‘sperm and egg’ idea and maybe a little bit of how the sperm meets the egg. I only remember that my comment was, “That is gross. YUK!” I think that I got hot in my face….
It was a while before I processed what dad had said. It was the following February 1st that my youngest sister Karen joined our family. That was about six month later after my Dad told me that she was on her way.
What in the name of all things religious – has sex education to do with a church blog?
Kind of funny actually is my answer. Today I find myself knowing about as much about God – what he might do, what he can do, what he will do as I did about sex at 7 or 11 years. Really I was kind kind of dumb… when I think of it now.
I am that way with God too.
I am like Christopher… “That’s not a long story!” and have missed what it is all about.
Or like Jonathan…“No, not really, not now..”
