When Enough Isn't Enough

I am sure that all of us have experienced time when the delicious meal is almost over and you realize that you have eaten too much. But then the hostess brings the next course of food to the table. That is when the dessert shows up for me. I am already stuffed and then the huge pie stacked with whipped cream comes to the table. “Oh boy, I don’t think I will be able to do this…” I think to my self…. Then later realize that I should not have eaten that last piece…”Oh Boy! Oh boy, oh boy…!”

It is then that I realize that enough is a enough.

On Sunday afternoon we had a visitor come that couldn’t say enough was enough. In fact to state it a different way, enough isn’t enough with this visitor.

My wife had just filled the bird feeder and a new guest arrived. We have had Cardinals and Blue Jays recently. Usually they come in twos or threes. Then there are the Chic-a-dees that sing their beautiful refrain over and over again as they wait their turn to enter the feeder restaurant.

Meet Mr. Striped Squirrel. He is an interesting little fellow. Not one bit concerned how close I came to his munching. The only thing that mattered was getting as many and as much of the seeds and nuts that he could get from the feeder dish.

This little creature was half the size of the larger black or grey squirrels that frequent the back yard. But he could eat way more… because he stored it in his cheeks. In fact at one point I thought that he might explode with his treasures. He worked at the feeder until it was almost empty.

His trick, from what I could determine was to stash it away – not swallow. His black and grey cousins swallow it as they eat it. The will carry whole nuts to the edge of the yard but almost 90% of the time they eat it on the spot. Mr. SS had no intention of swallowing it – he carried it away for later.

If only I would have learned that lesson earlier. Stash it away and not eat it all. Retirement would be different than it is going to be. Not enough seeds stashed I am afraid – yikes.

Related to another area – friendship – this is also very true. I need that stash of friends now… so that later there is abundance of support. Doing this life alone is ‘nuts’ – pardon the pun.

Blessings are like that as well. I so need to be blessed at times – especially when it is all falling apart around me. When stuff happens that is terrible – my health goes and my problems come – friends are what gets me through – and with them comes the blessing.

I will be thinking of Mr. SS today as he works so hard for the future.

Enough isn’t enough when it comes to blessings and friends…. how about you?
