Hooks That Entice You To Bite
Imagine that you are a fish. Your home is comfortable and you always have enough to eat. Every morning as the beautiful sun beams ripple over the stones of your living room floor and then through the foliage outside your living room walls – you are reminded that everything is good in your portion of the pond. Life is simple and very good now. You need only swim a short distance for food to be provided. It is so good that you are now a pleasant size and need not fear larger fish any longer. Your friends have often commented on your new and powerful ability to hunt and take food. You are strong.
Just for a moment stay with me on this imagination trip.
One day as the sun rises and begins filtering through the vegetation around your home something new wiggles across the top of the tall vegetation. Then it drops suddenly to a lower depth half way down the tall green vegetation where you used to hide from larger fish. It is in the place that you call safe. The site is amazing of this new dancing creature. Its colour is very attractive and way that it wiggles to and fro has already made your mouth and stomach tell you it is time for breakfast! It seems to be just like that delicious morsel that came by two days ago. The difference is this one is more alive and seems to have a freshness about it that has produced new interest in you. Something is stirring within your breast and you need this new morsel. You are now really hungry after sleeping last night. It is time to come closer for a better look.
Cautiously now you approach with care. You do not want to scare this beautiful creature away. In another moment it will be yours and it will be wearing you. Slowly now… just over the next clump… a little to the right – there now – flash and thrust it is YOURS! Open the mouth as you have done a thousands times before – and bingo you swallow the colourful morsel… IT IS YOURS!
The Rapid Change…
What is the matter with me? The new morsel has taken on new life – away more power than I have ever experienced before. Instead of settling into my stomach it is now pulling me forward from inside of my throat and mouth – somehow wiggling and yet not wiggling – it is pulling me forward with a frightening power. My heart beats faster and I am in the fight of my life – thrashing and crashing from side to side. This little morsel is really putting up a fight. Nothing I have ever swallowed has been this much fun – or has been this frightening before. Wait until I can tell the guys next door about this one.
The last thing that I remember is a flash and the sun is brighter than it has ever been. I am flying now out of the water and into the air. With a sudden painful crash I am lying on a dry surface and struggling violently with the fact that there is no more water to push against. My flailing moves and powerful thrusts are useless. Laying on my side I see a very large creature looking down at me and then a very large thing reaches out to hold me by the throat. My last valiant efforts seem to be of no avail as the hold is too strong even for my powerful muscles.
Suddenly I drop into a small pond with no vegetation. There are two other guys in here with me. Both stare blankly at the white wall ahead. One still holds tightly on to his breakfast that is hanging from his mouth. This is the strangest pond I have ever seen. What will happen next?
Reality…
A Big Fish is born everyday. Some have said that a ‘sucker is born everyday’. You need only to offer an enticing bit of bait, a small morsel that will have some attractive wiggle and look so good that you would not be able to pass it up…and they will bite. With one simple snap they are caught and they are yours for the keeping.
I want to scream at the friends I have – don’t bite! Stay away! Watch out – it is a trap. They are out for your money.
One man in our community I’ll call John, that attended our church for a while, seemed very unhappy. There was a cloud that hung over his head all the time. Depression? Perhaps… but a friend of his explained his predicament to me.
A few years back in John’s early retirement he had someone contact him with an unbelievable offer. It was so good. If he got involved and made a reasonable investment he would be able to increase that investment over twice the going rate at the bank… or any investment place he had every read about in a short few months. The logic was simple and straightforward. Write a cheque for $10,000 and within two months it would grow to $12,000. Imagine – do nothing but write the cheque and then wait for a $2000 growth. The next step was simple. Leave the $10,000 in the depository place and wait two more months – another $2,000 would appear.
He tried it – and it worked just as his friend had told him. At the end of two months a cheque arrived for $2000. As he began his second waiting period his friend shared his excitement as well. He had also made $10,000 dollars and had bought a new TV and upgraded his kitchen with the money. He had invested way more – but he could afford it.
John talked to his wife one day and told her that he believed strongly that they should “go big”. The retirement money in one account was safely stored and yielding not a bad interest each year. What was coming out was good and paid for many extras that they needed. With some reservations on her part – he took the money and made the huge investment. In two months time he would get a huge pay off… from his calculations he should receive a cheque for over $50,000 in two months. In one year they would have doubled their money – then they could help their children with a new house – or whatever.
It was a very long two months. Then it was three months. The person that he had given the cheque to was rather hard to contact. At first John’s calls were answered regularly. He could hear the tenseness in the man’s voice. Then the other man returned his calls less frequently. There was some talk about a glitch in the system, computer failures, and some government opposition in one country. All of it was talk John didn’t understand.
When it was all over – John and his wife lost over $250,000. Their friend moved away suddenly and the man that had been their main contact was gone also.
Big Fish not only are born every day – they cry a lot and sit alone depressed. They hurt so deeply that they can’t even express it. Even church is hollow for them.
If it sounds too good to be true – it will be – and it will cost you dearly.
The Internet is the newest place for really good lures to be dangled in front of your nose. The one I have copied in below is a good example. I have removed the barbs from it so that no one will be tempted to snap at it.
All I can say – is be aware. Even praying about it doesn’t help. John and his wife prayed about their investment as well. Their first “contact friend” attended their church with them. They met shaking hands one day in the foyer.

Murray, this is a marvelous analogy with the fish. It very clearly demonstrates what could happen if you get “lured” in by some clever scheme. We most definitely need to “test the waters’ to make certain it is really as good as it looks before we take the “bait”. Good warning Brother.
