360 Degree Leadership - An Amazing Study

Meet Philip and Karin Bennett – newly weds June 10, 2006.

Yesterday was an amazing day for this young couple. They were married in a beautiful park setting. They began a journey of life together. It was a joy for me also as I was given the opportunity to perform their ceremony.

After the ceremony was over we moved into the next important stage of the wedding – Photographs. The photographer took over at this point.

Then came the next few hours for the rest of us – just waiting… in our case, 3:45 PM until 6:30 PM, until the meal would be served. We moved into a time of watching/meeting each other. Some are meeting old friends and others meeting family members they haven’t seen since the last wedding (or funeral). One part the afternoon is very interesting – two families are meeting each other’s extended family. Then there are all the co-workers of the bride and groom that are having so much fun it is hard to describe.

I realized yesterday the amazing reality of the 360 Degree Leadership factor. In every speech throughout the reception people testified of the way that others had touched their lives. There were many “thank you-s”, and some tears and many relationships described. For the outsider, such as a minister and his wife, it was like reading a new book and discovering who each character is. It was simply amazing to say the least.

You could clearly see…that lives of each family reached many people, so had the couple’s life. Each in their own way had an influence of each guest.
  • They had Lead Up - Influence the boss and others higher in your world
  • They had Lead Across - Influence co-workers/peers in your world
  • They had Lead Down - Influence subordinates and those lower in your world
  • They had Lead Out - Influence those who do not work in your world

The “peer” relationships are perhaps the most powerful evidence for the couple. They had so interacted with each other that it would be hard to describe in a few words. This couple are “leadership quality people”. They have a potential to encourage and reach-out to their friends. But most of all to let their light shine… the light of that continued leadership. This couple will make a difference in their world.

This is a photo of the second happiest couple at the wedding, Winston and Brenda Van Lier. They have continued to offer their care and leadership to their daughters. God bless you richly!
