A New Definition of Old - The Gospel of Emma - the Lighter Side of Life
Yesterday, as we traveled in the van to the next activity, Emma was describing an older lady as a “Granny”. She talked about an old lady that was walking slowly down the street with a walker.
In the pause of her story my wife Alida asked her, “But Emma, I am a “granny” now. Am I like that?” I am sure Alida’s interest was to help Emma understand that it is not good to refer to older people in bad ways.
Typical of her 7 year old mind – there was an immediate answer that was clear and very easy to understand.
“Grandma, you’re not a “granny”. You are a Grandma! Grannys have lots of wrinkles around their mouths. You are not a granny!”
It is at moments like that I want to burst out laughing. She has done it again. In her beautiful and direct way she has let the world know the truth.
Emma has a strong will and some strong attitudes. At times I think I am looking back in time. Soooo much like her mommy! Now Dana, her mom, doesn’t think that I am sure. Today Dana is a brilliant and sparkling woman. Tomorrow, I have no doubt that Emma will sparkle too.
Have you ever thought… “If I could just capture that feeling, those words, or their excitement – I would be rich!”
For me, I need to write it down. One day when I am gone – a grandson or granddaughter will open the old computer file up and there will be all the words that Grandpa wrote.
I am thankful of one thing…. Grandma gets a whole lot more attention with her aging than Grandpa does. But again…maybe it’s the way that I act. Yikes what a thought!
