Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice
Quotes that blow me away…
You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do.
One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do.
It is all one to me if a man comes from Sing Sing Prison or Harvard. We hire a man, not his history.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right!
A bore is a person who opens his mouth and puts his feats in it.
All the above are from Henry Ford…
I wonder if Henry lived today….if he could make ‘a go’ of it. I know his car still sell and the product line of his factories are certainly different. In my musing – I wonder if he would be able to cope with what we have around us today?
I have a feeling that he might lock horns with his/our community.
In our area – it is easier to not work than to work. My neighbour has a youngster living out of his house from time to time. I see him in the driveway from time to time as I drive by. He is a boyfriend of my neighbour’s daughter. The ‘kid’ has fathered a baby, smokes lots of cigarettes, and eats my neighbours food free.
When my neighbour talked to the ‘kid’ about getting a job – the flat out answer was “NO way! If I worked I would lose my benefits and health care package that comes with the disability that I have.” My neighbour rolled his eyes with that statement.
If the ‘kid’ lined up to ask Henry Ford for a job – even Henry would have a problem with that one. But then he likely wouldn’t line up for a job – he would want a car for free.
The ‘food bank’ folk in our area have problem distributing food to these kinds. They see the ones that could work and don’t – or won’t. They see the ugly stuff that none of us know about – yet they still stay at the job of helping the less fortunate.
Oh I know that many people really need the help. I am not objecting to that group getting help…but I do have a problem with the guy that is useless. For that guy… I say…. “You don’t work you don’t eat”.
Or as Henry Ford said, “Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice.”
In our world… the ‘kid’ is looking for a government worker to come and chop his wood for him.
I started working when I was 15. Sounds like an old story from long, long ago doesn’t it. Well it was only 49 years ago…and everyone of those years has been a delight. At the end of good work you feel alive because you were able to do something.
Flash back…
My first job was with my Uncle Neal in that summer I was 15 - 49 years ago. I was able to drive a tractor and follow Uncle Neal around – almost as his shadow. At the end of each day we were tired and the bed felt great.
At the end of the summer he paid me. WOW! Was I ever rich….I had made $5.00 a day. Looking back now…Uncle Neal couldn’t really afford the money he paid but he paid it anyway. He believed in me and I was the beneficiary of his kindness.
The best part wasn’t the pay – but rather the work. There is nothing like being able to work.
Henry, if you watching us to day and maybe you get a chance to read this Blog… I want to say that some of us still have some old fashioned value left. We are working to show those younger than we are – that working is good…and you feel good when you work.
